The Restaurant

Restaurante Mirador Morayma

The Restaurante Mirador de Morayma is situated in the Granada mountains in the small town of Albayzín. This means that you can not only enjoy the fantastic views of the city of Granada, including the mighty La Alhambra, but you can also experience the beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The view is so picturesque that it is like looking in a Granada city guide!

The restaurant takes its name from the wife of the last Moorish Sultan of Granada before the city was reclaimed by the Spanish during the Reconquista of Spain, a piece of Spanish history that has shaped the country into what it is today. Princess Morayma was married to Muhammad XII of Granada and it is thought that she spent some time living near to the town of Albayzín while her husband was imprisoned. She has been the source and inspiration for many works by writers and artists such as Francisco Izquierdo the poet from Granada.

The Restaurante Mirado de Morayma is located in a historic building called a 'carmen' which comes from the Arabic 'karm' in the mountains. A carmen is a house with its own garden and often an orchard or vegetable garden which is enclosed within an exterior wall. These buildings are typical of the region of Granada because it was the city that the Moors occupied for the longest period of time.

All of the elements of the carmen that houses the Restaurante Mirador de Morayma have been lovingly preserved which gives the restaurant an authentic yet rustic feel. The gardens are full of beautiful, mature plants, and combined with the surrounding wall, the gardens are transformed into a private spot away from the prying eyes of passers-by.

The interior still retains many early features including the wooden ceilings and the intricate wooden windows. The walls are covered with paintings of famous historical people and artefacts from the history of Granada. The overall feel of the Restaurante Mirador de Morayma is homely, particularly with the intimate tables and small dining rooms.
